WHAT WINE IS ELIGIBLE? All wines available for sale in British Columbia. JUDGING: Judges are carefully selected and include a cross-section of Vancouver wine experts, restaurateurs, sommeliers, journalists and educators. PREVIOUS WINE COMPETITIONS: Vancouver magazine’s first five wine competitions were resoundingly successful, attracting over 3,250 entries from 15 countries. 2009 FACTS: • 65 of the 100 winning wines were priced at $25 and under, highlighting an emphasis on value. • 33 of the winning wines were made by BC wineries, including the Rosé and Dessert Best Of category winners. Plus, there were winning wines from 13 countries, with strong medal representation from Australia, Chile, Italy and Spain. • Best in Show winner was Pikes Traditional Clare Valley Riesling 2007 (Australia, $24.99). • Winners ranged in price from $10.99 (ConoSur Viognier and Merlot) to $67.99 (Fabiano/Fondatori Amarone). Reflecting British Columbia’s cutting-edge wine market, the winners were an eclectic mix which included big brands (Nicolas Feuillatte, Peter Lehmann and Concha y Toro), esoteric specialties (Douro CARM Branco, Donnafugata Anthìlia and Elephant Island Orchard Framboise) along with regional wines (CedarCreek Pinot Noir, Solaz Tempranillo, Mount Riley Sauvignon Blanc, and Jim Barry Shiraz).
